“Oh my god, all you do is walk really slow all the time or just stand and wait.”
Visual artist Karen Kasel talks about her Low Tech/High Joy collaboration as well as the work of a full time mom.
“I couldn’t think about the world. I had dirty diapers everywhere.”
Karen talks about her kids starting an art stand as a way to make summer money instead of a lemonade stand. She talks about transitioning from painting to drawing because her time was too limited to actually make painted work. And she talks about how different her work is when she’s drawing as opposed to when she’s painting.
“What do I need the most to get back into my brain as an artist?”
Karen talks about trying to come back to making work after spending large chunks of time away from her art practice. She talks about her work moving towards realism and how that surprised her. And she talks about finding drawing and painting at an early age.
“I’m a stay at home parent and I don’t really have any earning ability, right now.”
Karen talks about working for organizations she cares about to support her practice as an artist. She talks about the challenges of managing two children and trying to still find time to not only make the actual work but also get into the right creative headspace. Karen also talks about trying not to resent her family for keeping her from making work.
